Keanu Reeves

Mentioning him in the other thread, got me to thinking about his acting ability or lack thereof. He was good as Neo, I'll give him that. But he's been terrible in just about every film I've ever seen him in otherwise.

What do you think? Am I judging him too harshly or is he really the worst actor in Hollywood?

Defining a good actor/actress isn't very easy, but I think at least two things need to be satisfied.

1. At least one of characters he/she played was a great fit to him/her. For example, Keanu Reeves playing Neo.

2. Actor/actress played more than two very different characters and played well. For example, Edward Norton playing Holden Spence in Everyone Says I Love You and playing Derek Vinyard in American History X. Holden Spence is totally nice young man wearing sweater and slacks. Derek Vinyard is nearly psychotic, but very powerful (both physically and mentally) neo-Nazi guy. These two characters are almost polar-opposite.

Keanu Reeves satisfies 1, but not 2.

Personally I agree that Reeves is not a good actor. Sure he was good at Neo but anybody can act if the character they are playing has the same personallity.

A good actor would be able to pull off any role that the director threw at them, Reeves cannot and anybody that says he could should go see more movies that he has been in.

No not a good actor, but something that wants to make you look at him is enough for studios to bank on him. Charisma maybe. Mysticism.

Its not just the pretty face, there's plenty to bank on for that.
There's something else.

Hes never going to live down the Matrix. People are going to expect him to play just as good or better in every new role he plays. And his last movie was well... you know what I mean. I dont think it will be long beofre hes washed up unless he gets another killer role.

I guess when you think about it, Keanu has a limited vocal spectrum. Even if he's a good actor, his genetic disposition prohibits him from expressing more than a deeply monotone voice.

In this respect, I like Keanu. I think a lot of people are too critical of one's acting skills. Perhaps I'm more empathetic because I come off quite awkward when people first meet me. Hence, if I played myself in a movie, people would say I'm a bad actor. Laughing

What I really look for in an actor, is credibility. For instance, I enjoyed other movies by Reeves like Sweet November and Something's Gotta Give. Is it so hard to believe that there is a person in the world who talks, walks and carries himself in that manner? Confused

I thought he was good in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. I liked him alright in the smaltzy Point Break, even if he was named after a western state.

Other than that, not much to cheer about. He has struggled in many movies. What was the lawyer movie with Al Pacino?

I've seen cardboard cutouts that can stand in and play a better role.

He plays the exact same character in every movie. I love the Matrix, and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is one of my childhood favorites, but ya.. he's well-payed cardboard.

I think he is a great actor. He was exceptionally good in the Matrix movies.
