A small village in rural China must hire a 13 year-old girl from a neighboring village to substitute for the schoolteacher while he takes a month off. Teacher Gao tells the girl she must prevent the children from leaving school for the city to find work, and promises her a bonus if she hasn't lost any students when he returns. Young Teacher Wei is an indifferent teacher at best until the class troublemaker leaves for the city to support his sick mother; then the entire class must use their wits to find him.
