Very loosely based on the life of actor-playwright Moliere , this film follows Moliere as he agrees to teach acting to a wealthy merchant with pretensions to nobility (while disguised as a priest). Moliere becomes enamored of the merchant's neglected wife even as the merchant realizes the pretty noblewoman he was hoping to impress will never consider him. There's a fine line between tragedy and farce, and Moliere learns to tread it carefully.
