Darren Aronofsky
For those who do not recognize the name, Darren Aronofsky is a prominent independent film director who first came to light with this student thesis film "Supermarket Sweep" starring Sean Gullette.
He then gained even more exposure from moviegoers when he released his first psychological thriller film, "Pi," also starring Sean Gullette and Mark Margolis. The film is about a mathematical prodigy, Maximillian Cohen, who believes that everything in nature can be understood through numbers. Utilizing the stock market as his data set, Max tries to uncover patterns with the assistance of his homemade supercomputer Euclid. He has been plagued with migraine headaches since age 6. He suspects that the headaches originate from a childhood injury, in which he stared into the sun at such length that "the doctors didn't know if [his] eyes would ever heal." The day that his eyes had healed, Max experienced his first headache. He also suffers from extreme paranoia, manifested in menacing hallucinations, and some form of social anxiety disorder.
After "Pi," Aronofsky finally captured the critics and Hollywood fans with his haunting depiction of drug addiction with his famous movie "Requiem for a Dream." It is the #60 movie of all time on IMDb.com ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180093 ). It starred, once again, Sean Gullette, Ellen Burstyn, Jennifer Connelley, and Jared Leto. This was the movie which many people declared Aronofsky as the next Stanley Kubrick.
His follow up movie was a box office bomb, but was strongly critized and praised: "The Fountain." Like "2001" by Kubrick, Aronofsky rebuilt the science fiction/fantasy genre by creating a universe and unique story and plot structure that many people believed to be way ahead of its time (the movie is structured using a unique three-split period point of view).
