he is KIND OF solid. the Matrix was one of those fluky massive hits and he has been in a ton of bad movies. Bobby Z was horrible as was Biker Boys. Event Horizon, etc. But his EARLIER stuff is what makes him a strong actor for me. Searching For Bobby Fisher is 4 stars, Deep Cover, Boys in the Hood and King of New York are urban classics.
