How important is a Director
Here is my question to you. How important is a director really? Do you think that a director is more, less or just as important as a good cast. _________________

How about a "good" movie using a bad cast? _________________

Rutger Hauer was great in Blade Runner, but he hasn't been in any major film expect for Blade Runner.
Sideways. Another great film, but Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh are all non-top-rated actors/actresses.
Das Boot. Most actors were unknown when the film was made except for Jürgen Prochnow.
Requiem for a Dream. Relatively speaking, actors and actresses are not-top-rated. _________________

A director makes or breaks a film because it is their vision that is up their on the screen.
Even though there are dozens of other creative roles in the crew, they are all trying to bring the director's vision to the screen. In other words, the director has the final say in all creative matters.
This is more evident in low budget independent films than studio blockbusters (where there is more interference), but the principle remains the same.

I would go on the director's hand more than on the actors. A good director can do wonders. Can present a relatively boring plot into something special, can 'tweak' the images to get the people to the "feelings" he's got in mind for the scenes and so on. A good director is the main part of a good movie, in my opinion. _________________

huh? So you think that the janitor is as important as the director? Then why don't they get paid the same?
Naw the director is extremely important, they are the ones that make the movie work, they are more of the story teller than the play write. _________________

Don't forget prior to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, Elijah Wood's reputation was on a downwards slope. Most of the actors are now appearing on hit TV series (Dominic Monaghan in Lost, his hobbit buddy... I forget his name, appeared on this season's 24, etc). Viggo also was cast in Hidalgo and History of Violence after he claimed his stake at fame from LOTR Trilogy.
Matrix anybody?
Of course we can't forget George Lucas' Star Wars... _________________
