hasn't this idea been played with many times before, like we had telephone services where you listened to an ad before each call and the call became free. They never seem to work tho.

I don't thing the telephone comparison is really a valid one. Google have a proven track record. If anyone can make something like this work, it's them.

Yes, but not google adsense, that is for web only.

Google is currently looking at Video as the next stage in their total domination of the world using their unique brand of advertising. Soon we are going to see Google ads on food products we buy and cola cans (well maybe not).
The purchase of www.youtube.com by Google early this week just emphasises how far Google are willing to go, and even through adsense they are offering advertisers the ability to show video ads, which is, I'm sure, what they are going to do to monetize youtube!
