Shakespeare Behind Bars

Just watched this movie. It documents the annual Shakespearian plays that are performed by the inmates of Kentucky's correctional facility.

It definitely portrays the human side of killers and molestors. You wouldn't think that people who were capable of commiting savage acts, could experience such phantasmagoria of emotions. It just goes to show you that a lot of people in prison are normal like anyone else... they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes all it takes is for the cosmos to align to such imperfection, and in that split moment, it's the only thing to do. The crime seems justified... until the ecliptic phase passes away and reality hits you with a ton of conflicting emotions you can't explain through words.

Shakespeare's plays deal with characters who are overwhelmed by inner turmoil. Thus, it only seems appropriate for the prisoners to assume a familiar role. Through the cathartic process, the inmates are able connect with the characters, and ultimately comprehend their lives - past, present and future - on a deeper level.

... how would you rate this movie? I get the impression that you liked the movie, but ... would you call it a modern classic? Good entertainment? Insightful? Touching?

A movie has to be really great for me to refer to it as a modern classic. On that note, it's probably more like a well-done PBS documentary.

It was insightful to me, because I thought all prisons were running rampant with maniacs. Apparently, that's only in the Los Angeles county prisons. Maybe even New York.

Is it touching? Yes, most of the members from the featured cast have been in prison for almost all their lives. On one hand, they want to leave but on the other hand, they'd rather stay because they've accomplished so much more in prison.

Entertainment-wise, I wasn't hootin' and hollerin'. It's a steadily paced educational documentary. You learn something, but at the same time, it's not one of those overwhelmingly boring history productions.

It does indeed sound interesting. If I ever get a chance to watch it, I'll check it out.

Just watched this film, and I find that the film is rather depressing. While these actors committed horrible crimes, it seems that most of them have no future outside of the prison. One guy believed that he was going to get out within months, but ... his parole was denied. A couple of guys went up for parole, but they were denied. From what I heard the story in the film, one guy ended up taking someone's life as a result of self defense, but he has no chance of getting lighter sentence because he can't afford a good lawyer to defend him.
