In the end, it didn't appeal to me. Maybe I was expecting too much. A lot of people believe Shrek is the best 3D animated film made, and it's hard for me to take them seriously when I hear this. Then again, everyone has different tastes in movies and I should respect that.
I kind of sympathize with you here. Many people say that Shrek is one of the best animation films, but if you ask them how many animation films they watched, they often say that they just watched a couple of Pixar animation films. So, obviously they aren't really making any comparison, yet they're saying that Shrek is the best .
I like 3D animation, but if I was trying to convince someone to give the genre a try, Shrek would not be my recommendation. My personal favorite is Finding Nemo because it's so accessible to both children and adults. It's fast-paced, utilizes bright colors and cutesy characters for the kids, and also throws quite a few chuckle-worthy curve balls for the mature observers.
I also loved Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit. I'd probably rank it right in the league of Finding Nemo. _________________

I haven't seen it yet, but I hear Ratatouille is great for both kids and adults _________________

Pixar gets it right nearly every time. They thread clever adult humor into endearing characters in wild settings. I would say, though, that with the latest Shrek movie they push it a bit too far in my opinion.
Movies like Cat in The Hat were TERRIBLE in this regard. _________________

Yes, Shrek, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Incredibles, Ice Age and Monsters Inc are wonderful for both adults and children. I actually feel that all the Pixar and/or Disney are wonderful for all ages.
Going away from animation though, Fly Away Home is a great movie for both kids and adults. It's such a feel good movie and I recommend it strongly! _________________ Jude

I'd go with Harry Potter as well - adults can watch and enjoy them too, especially the later ones. _________________

I saw Shrek the Third last night and while I enjoyed it, it wasn't as quite good as the original. _________________
