Google to offer free movie downloads

Advertisers such as Burger King and HP are joining forces with Google to enables movies to be offered for free.

What do you think about this ?

I'll basically let other people try it out, and if they like it, then I'll try it out at some point. Free movie download has been available for some time, but I haven't found any great free movie download.

I wonder how long it'll be before we see very popular movies being available for free download??

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say... NEVER.

The point of producing a movie, is to generate profit by selling it to the consumers. There are currently online services that allow you to download movies for a price, but I don't think we'll ever get new movies for free through any medium, without illegal means.

I wouldn't say never, but it won't be kind of download that you just get a free movie. It'll be supported by ads, compulsory license or some sort.

I wouldn't say never either. Of course, the movie makers need to make money. But they can do that in other ways other than people paying for the download (eg. by advertising support).

Movies on TV and cable are supported that way, so it's not inconceivable that movie downloads become available at some point while they're supported by ads in some way.

We're speaking of fresh movies. Ain't gonna happen. It takes an average hit film 5 years to make it to cable. There will NEVER be a new film available online for free, as long as I live. If you believe advertisements will make up for the "free" component, then it will be out on TV before it hits the net.

I just don't think you can say "never". Look how much has happened with the internet in less than 15 years. What's going to happen in the next 30, 40 or 50 years...? It's certainly not impossible...

But how? To download movies within a reasonable time frame, you need something that's faster than cable/DSL modem. The next best thing is a T1 line, but T1 lines are pricey and restricted to businesses. Even so, one T1 line is used to operate several computers at the same time. In the end, the speed straggles out to that of a cable modem.

And if you think T1 lines are gonna get cheaper, it's remained the same price - if not steadily climbing in the last decade, as cable modems have.

True, US has a very serious problem, and their infrastructure has not improved for some time, but I doubt if it'll stay like for the next 10 years.
