2046
The movie 2046 is not science fiction, as the title may suggest, but a drama about a man who attempts to find a replacement for the one true love that slipped away. In the womanizing process, he weaves a reflective scifi tale to symbolize his life of romance - or lack thereof.
2046 starts off with high expectations due to the impressive cinemtography. Unfortunately the movie slows down drastically in the second half. It's filled with speechless meandering shots, typical of Asian films. I would've fastforwarded half of it, if the movie wasn't narrated. Hence, even if the displayed actor's mouth doesn't move, you can never tell if a vital bit of info's being released from the narrator's thoughts.
Still, the film shows off some solid performances from China's dream team cast of Zhi Zang, Tony Leung, Faye Wong and Gong Li. Aesthetically, it's topshelf material, but the story lacks a conclusive ending. _________________
