John Landis

I had a interesting re-awaking recently one one of the cable channels went through their 100 best comedies of all time. Perhaps it was on VH1.

I was suprised to see how many big comedies John Landis was involved in. I never really thought of him as a prime comedic director.

Perhaps it was just me, I just didn't remember him being primarily a comedian director. Of course maybe when he was involved with Oscar it wiped out the Three Amigos, Coming to America, Trading Places, Blues Brothers, Animal House, and Kentucy Fried Movie.

I love all those movies, yet somehow, I seem to have forgetten that Landis was involved. Is it because his career in the last 15 years has been nothing short of mediocre? Did the Twilight Zone Movie disaster leave too much of lasting impression with me?

With his earlier work, though, should he not be considered one of the great comedic directors of all time?

He seems to have many miss though he has some hits. Is he one of better comedic directors? Yeah, it's pretty fair to say that probably. The best? Not so sure ...

Okay... so who is better in terms of volume of high level comedies.

He had a half dozen classic comedies. I can not think of anyone off the top of my head on that level.

It is tough to transfer a television series to the big screen, no matter who's directing it. Heck, even special guest director Quentin Tarantino's two-hour season finale of CSI turned out to be overhyped.

I can honestly only think of one TV show that transitioned smoothly to movie theaters, and that's Firefly. This is primarily because the series got canned halfway into its first season. Creator/Director Joss Whedon still had plenty of ideas that he wanted to bring to life, and I'm sure the movie acted as a great vehicle to do just that.

he had a nice string of hits, but for a while was just pumping out movies. Make a lot of movies, there will be some good and some bad.

"Three Amigos, Coming to America, Trading Places, Blues Brothers, Animal House," - that alone is a full career for most.
