Exorcist: The Beginning...
Since the 1973 original, the Exorcist franchise has seen two mediocre sequels. In the highly anticipated prequel Exorcist: The Beginning, Father Merrin takes an offer to recover a relic in Turkana village, where they've excavated an ancient church that has managed to keep preserved underground.
Despite how harsh the critics panned the movie, the script actually isn't that bad. The problem is the director Renny Harlin, most accomplished for Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger, but just as easily degradable with cheesy bombs like Cuthroat Island, Mindhunters and Deep Blue Sea.
If you want to keep a horror franchise alive, the last thing you want to do is cast a director who's known for melodrama. True to his history, Harlin injects a sufficient dose of it for the prequel. However, with a bit of tweaking an overall competent script and replacing an imcompetent director, The Beginning actually would've stood a chance... _________________

As far as I know, the only prequel of a classic that works is The Color of Money. There is one movie that works, so I cannot say that the prequel of a classic never works, but ... it's extremely difficult to make it work. _________________

I wasn't saying that classics can't have sequels or prequels. For instance, Lord of the Rings has a fantastic prequel and the sequels aren't bad themselves.
The Nightmare franchise was designed to generate sequels after sequels. Any true horror director would have a ball toying with that series. Why the movie stopped at the fifth installment quite boggles me. Granted, there was Jason vs Freddy, and it actually ended up fun. _________________
