Something New...

Something New isn't so much a romantic comedy, as it's a romantic drama. When Kenya - a successful black lawyer - discovers that her blind date is white, she becomes blinded by the color of his skin due to social prejudice. The guy in question however, persists long enough in one of rare movies that dares to cross racial and cultural boundaries.

Few films attempt to cover the sensitive subject of race, but most fail to deliver a coherent, meaningful script. For instance, Crash was a movie formulated to touch on racial tension in the cities, but it doesn't offer a wholesome story. It merely poses a few instances and scenarios of racism. Of course, Something New does not throw the race pie right in your face like Crash, but it handles a variety of black-white relationship issues with intelligence, all the while presenting a solid date movie.

I wouldn't recommend Something New if you want to stay away from the realities of racial and cultural clash evident in today's society. But if you want to enjoy a mature romantic script that pulls the race card, give it a draw.

The followings are some of movies related to racial issues in US and I enjoyed watching those movies:

Crash
Bamboozled
Malcolm X
Do the Right Thing
Lumumba (Kind of ...)
Control Room

(I watched other related movies, but I was less impressed.)

Would you recommend this particular movie?

Ehh... I've seen Crash, X and Do the Right Thing from your list. I liked Do the Right Thing most. It's probably the only Spike Lee joint I'll ever like. I've also seen American History X and Harold/Kumar Go To White Castle, both of which are fun.

I can't say if this film is worth recommending to you, at least from surveying that list. It looks like the racial movies you watch are more heavy duty, whereas Something New is much lighter than Crash.

The way I look at it, there is a shortage of decent romantic movies... at least in the American movie industry. (I understand you've pointed out a few from France.) The movie's script is definitely above average. There aren't any corny moments or marks of an amateur screen play. Even if the film doesn't appease your racially charged appetite, perhaps you'll at least enjoy the movie.
