If I was Admin...

Just a few suggestions... anyone else is welcome to play along.

I WOULD: Add a Horror forum.

WHY: When I worked at the biggest Hollywood Video in California, the Horror section was the toughest to manage due to its popularity. Second was Comedy. SciFi and Drama were the least popular, so if these two genres deserve a forum, perhaps it might not be unjustified to give Horror a forum. Not many SciFi fans here so it might be neater to combine Horror and SciFi, as they're often accompanied together.

I WOULD: Change the name of the "Other" forum.

WHY: It's not catchy. Nor is "Misc." Perhaps I'd edit it to "Documentary and Others" or anything else. "Other" is another way to tell the visitor, "Don't Click." Actually, I think "Don't Click" would entice more people to click it. Laughing

I WOULD: Sort out threads in the General Discussion section and move them to their rightful forums. For instance, "Spy Game" would go to Action forum.

WHY: It's more organized. However, I'd keep new/hot threads in the General Discussion, even if it's misplaced (like Little Manhattan, Grizzly Man, etc), so it receives as much exposure as it can get for the period of time. This is because General Movie Discussion receives the most hits of all the forums. Once the thread starts droughting or expiring out however, move it to maximize activity in less populated forums (Drama, SciFi, Action, etc...) Of course, I wouldn't be able to do this with threads like, "Favorite Movie" as it can span all genres. Just the ones that could be better organized into specific genres. It also makes searches easier.

I agree for the most part. Now with regard to "Other", I'd like to keep it as there are movies that are difficult to categorize. That said, I agree with you that "Other"/"Others" is not a catchy name. How should I rename it? I don't want to use "Don't Click" partly because of Google AdSense TOS compliance.

I'm not quite sure myself.

There are few options with labeling a miscellaneous section. Perhaps you can go with the formula of "<somewhat popular genre here> and Others." For instance "Animation and Others." Then again, "Animation and Others" comes off like it's "Animation and Family-Oriented Films." Or you can always go with custom titles that sound ordinary but better than "Others" in a non-Lost-associated forums, such as...

- Everything Else
- The Rest of 'Em or simply The Rest
- Underrated Genres
- Genres Nobody Cares About
- Genres Not Enough People Care About
- Genres You Probably Don't Care About
- Genres That Are Too Smart for Conventional Folks
- Give These Genres Some Love
- Desperately Undersexed Genres
- Endangered Genres

...or you can always come up with something less clear and ambitious like...

- The Underappreciated
- Heterogeneous
- Buffet
- Out of Bounds
- The Orphanage
- Foster Home
- Genres That Are Too Poor to Afford Their Own Forums
- Chili Bowl with Finger
- Silicone Valley
- Michael Moore, Mickey Mouse and Young Eastwood
- I Give Up...

That's very very good. I appreciate your input. I like the following two.

Just created two new forums.

Horror : Discuss horror movies.

Documentary : Discuss documentary films.

If you have any suggestion on forum descriptions, I'd appreciate your input.

I WOULD: Quit making colorless threads asking folks for opinions, without contributing an opinion of their own.

WHY: It's uninspiring and bland. It's easy for people to agree or disagree, or add to whatever someone is saying. However, when you ask posters to construct an opinion out of thin air, they're less inclined to make that commitment.

I WOULD: Quit flooding forums with more or less the same threads. For example, the deluge of "Movies to watch at [insert age here].

WHY: It kills forums. One is enough. When people click on DRAMA forum, the first thing they see is 10 topics that have 0 posts, and you know what's the next immediate action they take? "Back" or worse, "Exit and enter new URL." The fact that the thread starter has nothing to say, also does wonders to dissuade others from posting a response. If I'm trying to attract posters to respond to my thread, I'd add personality and zing to it. It's more appealing and easier to connect with.

I WOULD: Enforce a stricter rule on one-liners and generic posts.

WHY: It only allows others to follow suit. When I first came to these forums, I thought it had a lot of potential to be honest. But the more I've been around, the more I've realized the type of posters who've been taking over... they lack personality and mental capacity to construct a meaningful post... something likewise intellects can respond to. It repels worthy posters from giving the forums a chance and encourages trolls to hop the train. Next stop? One Liner Boulevard.
