In Her Shoes

In Her Shoes is a character study of two sisters, who live in opposite worlds. Rose is a lawyer, who copes with her bedroom insecurities through her shoes. Maggie is unemployed, but depends on her sexual prowess to get by in life. When Maggie is kicked out of her father's house, the homewrecker ends up crashing on her sister Rose's couch and proceeds to wreak havoc. Finally when Rose reaches her breaking point, she climactically throws her sister out - a fateful event that leads to soul searching for both sisters.

If you don't like "chick flicks," I'd generally advise against this movie. In Her Shoes, was adapted from a novel by Jennifer Weiner, a best selling author who epitomizes the "Chick Lit" genre. In fact, I once attempted to read one her books entitled Little Hurricanes, but stopped short of 30 pages, realizing the overbearing number of bad analogies were a test to my sanity.

On the other hand, if you don't mind dramatic intensity and emotional meltdowns, the movie is easy to appreciate. The director Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, L.A. Confidential) moves In Your Shoes along gradually enough to relate to the characters. This movie alone is a testament to Hanson's talent, as Chick Lit adaptations are commonly out of sync and order when handled by an amateur (ex: How to Deal, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, etc). Having said this, In Your Shoes is far from another Hollywood chick flick. It carefully analyzes people's desire to be in someone else's shoes, and captures their process of maturing and coming to terms with what they've got.

I read mixed reviews about this movie, but I liked 8 Mile, so perhaps I should give it try.

In Her Shoes is nothing like 8 Mile story-wise, but if you found competence in the movie's directorial department, In Her Shoes is no exception. The "chicky" parts of the movie were uneasy for me, but the director did the best he could with what he had.

I like Cameron Diaz, but I'm not so crazy about her that I'd watch any movie featuring her. That being said, I think I need to give it a try at some point. It sounds like the movie is worth watching.
