Movies that are perfect... until the ending

A film's ending can really make or break a movie (ex. Sixth Sense). What are some movies you thought were potentially incredible, only to be disappointed by a weak ending.

EDITED by the posters of this thread

Unanimous Decision
- Broken Flowers
- Irreversible
- The Village
- Trzy Kolory
- Waking Life

Split Decision
- 25th Hour
- Runaway Jury
- Signs

I actually liked the ending. I was entertained.

I thought that this was the right ending, though it was not a very exciting ending. It was not meant to be exciting, IMO.

Irréversible (Irreversible) : I liked the movie, but I keep thinking that the ending could have been done a little differently.

Trzy kolory : Bialy: I think that I should watch this movie again, but as far as my memory serves, the ending could have been done better.

Broken Flowers : I liked many things about the movie, but the ending could've made the movie more alive.

Waking Life : The movie was not meant to have an ending that is comprehensive and clearly understood, but even knowing that, I feel that the ending could've made the movie even better.

Well this goes the same for the book, but last week in school we watched the movie Rainmaker based on the book with the same name by John Grisham, and then ending is terrible in that. And it was terrific up till the ending.

What did you dislike about the movie?

Well overall it was way different than the book. In the book, Rudy, the main character, is favored by the judge throughout the whole trial and is very professional even though he's a rookie. In the movie it's the opposite, he get's overruled all the time and he looks like he doesn't know what he's doing. And a lot of stuff was cut out from the movie as well.

But I didn't like the ending of the movie or the book.

I haven't seen the rest of the films, but I agree with Irreversible. The ending made small sense. Still, it's got the best skull bashing and rape scene from any movie I've seen.

Thank you for adding Broken Flowers. The ending blew ass. A lot of Broken Flower fans say it was supposed to end that way blah blah that's the type of film it is. Well, I don't like that type. It's just an excuse because they couldn't think of an ending. "It's up to you to decide what happens next." Rolling Eyes

I read several John Grisham's novels (not audiobook but paperback), and generally speaking, movies don't follow his novels. A lot of materials get cut out, and the ending changes pretty often. This works ok in some cases, but not always.

Baise-moi probably has better (i.e., more intense) rape scenes because Baise-moi is much more graphic.

I actually thought about that and asked myself "Should that be the ending?" I felt like I had to like it in order to be arty, but I came to realize that the ending could have been better. Because of the ending, the movie lacked any key message. Because of the ambiguity in the ending, the movie's funniness kind of faded away.

I actually thought Sixth Sense and Signs were great movies all the way through to, and including, the endings. I can't think of any movie ending off hand that made the movie terrible. Although I did think that Eyes Wide Shut was horrible (ending and all).

Nobody's disputing Sixth Sense, although upon recently viewing it again on network TV, the editing for the shocking finale looked poor. It's still a revolutionary film however.

Signs was a good popcorn movie, but the plain ending killed all the momentum that was going for it.
