Da Vinci Code

Anyone here seen it yet? I understand it's getting bad reviews but is still expected to do well at the box office...

Haven't seen it yet, and it's primarily because it's getting bad reviews. I was afraid of that. A couple of reasons why I wasn't so sure if this would be a good movie:

1. The director Ron Howard hasn't directed anything worth watching for the last several years.

2. Audrey Tautou is one of leading actresses in Europe, and whenever Hollywood pays a lot of money to hire European actor/actress, they tend to make a poor movie.

3. Da Vinci Code is an entertaining book, but a lot of events happen in the book, and I wasn't so sure if 2 hours or even 3 hours movie can cover key events nicely.

Kind of. Audio book.

It's a very entertaining book. Despite the fact that some church members are protesting against the movie, the book (and the movie) has no socio-economic value. It's nothing but entertainment. It's not like Dostoevsky or Tolstoy.

That's what I really like about it. I'm a Catholic but I can still enjoy the book because I know that it's not real, it's just some situations that have been considered by some to be real but are known by most to be fiction. It's great.

1. I actually thought Cinderella Man wasn't bad, but I started falling asleep during the boxing scenes.

2. You mean as in Ewan McGregor for The Island? Laughing

3. Agreed. I haven't read the Da Vince Code, but I do acknowledge that it's a thick book.

Movie adaptations are inferior to the original medium 99% of the times. Most movie adaptations that fare well with the critics, are from books that nobody has read. Hence, only a few critics possess the bias to compare the two. I think this was the majority case for Lord of the Rings. Not everyone reads fantasy novels, and thus Peter Jackson was addulated for his effort.

On the other hand, for international best sellers like Jurassic Park and Da Vince Code, even if the movie by itself is good, the movie carries little chance of being reviewed as a stand-alone product.

Another thing is that too many movies essentially buy the original book's brand name. Making movies is business, so doing that is understandable, but if you don't make a good movie, there is a great chance that you will fail financially.

In case of Da Vince Code, it seems that they will succeed financially at least.

I started to read it but didn't get much past the first few pages. I'm not much of a reader (of books) and rarely find the time. I usually read only about 1 or 2 books per year, and that's usually when I'm on vacation.

Its just disappointing is all.

It was just supposed to be better than it was is the problem. Tom Hanks was out of his element and Its a shame. It was hard to believe this was the same guy that gave us Saving Priveate Ryan, or Forust Gump.

The Book is by far better even though the fiction is obvious and the movie brings it out at an even alarming rate.

Just IMHO,

This movie made me happy that I saw it. I love ciphers, codes, and treasure hunts. This movie had it all!

I never read the book, so that might be why I liked the movie.

The religious folk, mostly of the Roman-Catholic decent, are protesting this movie for two reasons. Number one, they are directly and indirectly villianized in the movie. Number two, the fiction is so smooth, that gullible citizens might think it to be true and stop going to church.

IMHO, protesting the movie only gives it more weight against.

Anyhoo, back to the review!

Aside from the accents, I think the plot was good enough to warrant a film. It has enough riddles, codes, ciphers, treasure hunting, double cross, twists and inuendo to keep the audience in their seats, rather than at the consession stand.

This movie reminds me of several others that I loved, such as: Swordfish, Inside Man, National Tresure. If you even liked these films, you'll love Da Vinci Code movie.

Goof from the book that made it to the screen: We find out that the good guys place the tracking bug on a bar of soap from the bathroom, and toss it onto a passing open container-trailer. That meuseum uses liquid soap.

I read the book in one weekend. It was raining and I just couldn't put it down. Now I just have to find the time to go to the movie before it if out of the theatres.
