Signature rules

What rules, do you all think, this forum should have? More specifically, what rules and guidelines should this forum have with regard to links in signature? Links to sites promoting gambling, adult or questionable drug should be allowed?

As I've elaborated with my point of view before, this is a non-issue. If the member is contributing something, anything should be allowed. The only exception is if the banner false advertises or leads to a website that crashes your computer. Laughing

As an admin, here's my concern. It is generally believed that linking out to sites related to gambling, adult or questionable drug can hurt search engine rankings. Since signatures in this forum are visible to SE, I need to be a bit concerned about. Is there any way to accommodate this?

You raise a valid point. For high profile search engines like Google and MSN, it won't ruin your rankings. However, I do know of amateur search engines that don't allow adult content or profanity. I don't know how comprehensively the search engines investigate the site, but it would be reckless if they simply dismissed your site because someone on your forums posted a link that linked to another site, that linked to several more sites, of which one of them mentioned the word "ass," and hence your site was disqualified from the datebase.

Tell me if this is acceptable or not.

I can install a short script redirect.php on this forum, and I can ask to use the script if the forum signature links to adult-ish site like

/redirect.php?url=adult-ish.com

and I can add the url in robots.txt. This makes the link invisible to SE. Downside of this is that the link won't be counted by SE; therefore, some members may not be happy about it. What's your take on this?

Idea

Well as long as the link still directs to the intended site, I don't see a problem.

So what would the code be?

[redirect.php?url=www.yourSite.com]youSite.com[/url]

Question

I tried it, but to no avail. I'm uncertain if BBCode allows PHP markup in within its brackets.

Personally I would not allow adult or gambling content in forum signatures, same as posts, because at my forum that kind of thing isn't allowed in posts. And putting it in a sig is just a way to get around the rules.

If the site is 100% about adult or gambling, then I may need to ask to not link to the site. However, if a small part of the site is about adult or gambling, then it's acceptable. I feel a bit uneasy about gambling though.
