Hustle and Flow

When I heard a movie about rapping and pimping, had received a ton of critical addulation, I shifted to anticipation mode for its DVD release so I can rent it for cheap.

Hustle and Flow features Terrance Howard, as a pimp who's at the end of the ropes. But a chance encounter with Anthony Anderson - who plays a friend from the past - leads to countless sessions in their ghetto record studio, engineering phat beats and rhymes.

The intro to the movie was okay, because it's just warming you up to the lifestyle of a pimp. Once Anthony Anderson comes into the picture though, it gets a lot more interesting and fun. Although I was skeptical of Djay (the pimp) due to his erratic temper, he gradually won me over. The dramatic climax is raw and unforgettable.

This, Hustle and Flow, is my favorite:

1. Realistic portrayal of those who live at the bottom of pyramid in America

2. Redefines American Dream

3. Realistic portray of what it takes to achieve something

4. Great acting

5. Great cinematography

I was blown away by Terrance Howard's rap gimmick. He totally convinced me that he was 100% authentic.

I really thought if his acting didn't go over well, he could always become a rapper. Unfortunately, Terrance said he has no interest or talent in that musical genre.

That's an interesting comment. From what I understand, he is a self-taught musician and he can play piano and stuff. This is why he played a role in Ray.

Well, at least now I know he's naturally gifted in music. Perhaps he's more artistic in different genres of music besides hip hop. 3 6 Mafia wrote the rhymes for "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp," and ended up winning Best Original Score.

Also with regard to his acting, I thought that his acting was superb, especially after I watched a couple of movies featuring him. There is a certain speech pattern that uneducated people have, and I thought that he emulated that well. Now, I am not a linguist or PhD, but I got the feel of who the character is from hearing his speech pattern. I don't know, maybe it's just me ...

Hmm. I wouldn't necessarily say the speech pattern is "uneducated." It seems to be the familial vernacular used among black people in Memphis, educated or not.

But yes, Terrance Howard played a spectacular pimp. I wouldn't mind listening to hip hop lyrics from a true life pimp. We get enough of the same ol' gangster rhymes.

No matter what political persuasion you have, I think that you have to acknowledge that the most important characteristic of "America" has been fading. "America" is a place where people are naive in a good way and they believe that every problem has a solution. No matter who you are or where you are from, you can make it. There is always "American Dream", though it may not exactly be materialized into a big house or fancy car (or wife like Scarlett Johansson or husband like Brad Pitt or whoever). Optimism always wins over pessimism. There is always "Hope." To me, the movie is about that, about "Hope" and optimism, and the movie came out when this "Hope" has been fading out; it's a great timing, and it reinstates what "America" really is.

Am I overvaluing this movie?

Laughing

I was wondering where you were headed with the analysis, but I understand now. For sure, I agree. Hope and optimism are wonderful life ingredients as long as you stay levelheaded at the same time.

Excellent observation.
