Image in signature

I've never thought about using image in signature or not using it, but one new member just started using an image in his signature, so I'll need to take a look.

Should we allow the use of image(s) in signature or not? Does everyone like it that way or dislike it?

In my opinion, if you sell banner ad space, then it probably shouldn't be allowed. To me it's just a way for people to not have to buy that space and still get to use their banner ad. Most images I see in forum signatures are banner ad size so that's why I mention that. However, if the images are smaller than that or you don't sell banner ad space, then it shouldn't be a problem.

That's a valuable input. Anyone else?

The way I look at it, as long as the member is contributing something to the forums, he or she should be allowed to have anything on avatar/sig. Even if it's an advertisement, the member is essentially paying for space with posts.

One of the ways I measure the integrity of a forum, is by its rules. If they're too strict and uptight, I pass. For instance, I rarely post on forums that don't allow images in avatar/sig. Pictures add personality to the internet. Without it, a forum becomes dreadfully bland, and less people are compelled to join it. Many people, such as myself, are visual creatures. Even if I don't remember members by their names, I associate their fond posts with the accompanying sig and avatar. Hence, it tends to get problematic when they abruptly change their images. Laughing

I have a friend who won't join a forum that does not allow animated GIFs on the signature/avatar. Granted, I can understand why administrators would disprove of animated images, as it can slow a server down. But I'm just using this example to show that rigidity and censorship, is not perceived highly on the part of potential forum members.

Ok, you made a great case. What do you think about the size?

I don't really mind the size unless it's intolerably gigantic. To get an idea of how an ultra-popluar forum deals with its image regulations, I direct you to the following threads...

http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/showthread.php?t=69584

Notice almost everyone on these forums like to decorate their avatar and sig with colorful, eye-catching images... some are almost half the page, but at the end, nobody complains, unlike some highly conservative sites I've been to.

Is it reasonable to set it under 468x60 for the time being ... or it's too strict?

It wouldn't affect me because I don't have a larger image than 468x60. However, like I mentioned previously, setting an image restriction may turn away potential interest from the forums.

Personally, I wouldn't be concerned until someone with a Hulk-sized banner comes along and threatens to rip apart the very thread structure of the forums, which I highly doubt will happen soon, if ever. And if it does, I'm sure you can negotiate a reasonable deal with the member in question.

That's just how I deal with my forums, and I understand if you have more organized plans for your forums. I guess I'm just used to lax forums, where everything goes. Wink

Ok, I'll let this one go for the time being, and if someone displays a gigantic image or extremely flashing gif/flash, then I'll handle it then.

So are we going for 468x60? Personally I allow 500x120 and 80kb at my forum.

Wow ... 500x120, huh? It's preferable that the image be 468x60 or smaller, but I'm not 100% against 500x120. If you don't have anything else, then 500x120 be fine, I guess ...

What do you want to display? Can you show us?

Personally, I'm not a fan of images in sig files (and I don't allow it on my boards). I think it's a bit too much and can make a board look a little messy. It's not so bad if the images are good quality and not too obtrusive but I just find it easier to have a blanket ban and that way there's no ambiguity. Of course, this is just my opinion... I totally respect what any board owner wishes to do. It is afterall their board.

For a large forum there may be BW issues. and loading issues for users on dial up.

I would recommend a hack that would only show any persons sig once. per page or thread. I know that there is a hack like this avaiable for VB not sure about phpBB
