Christian Bale

I think this is a good actor who is moving up in the movie. He has played a good role in all the movies I seen him in.

Do you like him?

Batman Begins
El Maquinista (The Machinist)
Empire of the Sun

He is one of my favorite actors. His role in Batman Begins was very impressive.

He was a good match, and I liked the following aspects of his character:

1. Christian Bale as Batman was youthful.

2. He was fit.

3. He had a bit shady character in him, which, I think, is critical.

He was a great pick for the title character in Batman Begins. Made the movie enjoyable to watch. It is also one of those movies that I have watched a few times and still like.

He is an actor that I will probably go see again, but I have to say that I haven't really seen him in other movies.

For sure.

The previous Batman flicks were awful because his character was sugarcoated. Batman is supposed to be dark and badass, not PG-13.

Christian Bale is the perfect Batman and I can't wait for the sequel.

If you read Crime and Punishment written by Fyodor Dostoevsky and if you liked it, then you'd like El Maquinista (The Machinist).

I heard mixed reviews on Machinist. I don't really know what it's about, but if it's anything like Laurel Canyon, spare me.

i) Parallel lines between El Maquinista and Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment

1. Crime and Punishment has three parts. Part 1 is the murder that the main character commits, Part 2 is his discovery of his crime and Part 3 is rebirth of the main character. El Maquinista basically takes out Part 1 and Part 3 and only focuses on Part 2. There are parallel lines between El Maquinista and Part 2 of Crime and Punishment. Trevor Reznik played by Christian Bale struggles to discover the fact that he killed a young boy; he has no physical defect, yet he is psychologically tormented so that he cannot connect his life and the murder that he committed. Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment also experiences similar difficulty of accepting the fact that he committed murder.

1.2. While both characters have great difficulty of accepting their crime, they both choose to suffer to seek salvation. Trevor Reznik keeps losing weight; he physically suffers, and he elevates the level of suffering, as more time passes. Raskolnikov also chooses to suffer; he chooses to suffer psychologically more than physically, but the extent to which they both choose to suffer is rather extreme, and this is where we find parallel lines.

2. Both the woman who comforts the main character Trevor Reznik in El Maquinista, Stevie, and the woman who comforts the main character Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment are prostitutes, though they meet their women in different circumstances. Trevor Reznik meets Stevie as a customer, but Raskolnikov meets Sofya through Sofya's father; Raskolnikov is not a Sonya's customer. However, there are many similarities in how these two women comfort their men and guide them to free their soul.

I'm pretty sure they're making a Begins sequal with him still as Batman, that should be good.

Is it just the two feeling remorseful and obscenely torn for two hours? Would you recommend it?

What I can say is this. If you read any of novels written by

Leo Tolstoy
Fyodor Dostoevsky or
Ivan Turgenev

and if you liked it, then you'd probably like El Maquinista. If not, you may not like it. It's a pretty interesting film actually; this is an American indie film, but the film was produced in Barcelona. According to the director, indie films aren't really taking off in US yet, and he argues that it's rather difficult to make films like this one; this is why he produced it in Barcelona.
