Spike Lee: Talented or Overrated?
What's your opinion of the films of Spike Lee? Do you think he's a talented director? Or is he overrated? Do you feel that his films are an accurate representation of Black life?

I think he's a very talented director. When I watch films like 25th Hour and Summer of Sam, I can separate black/African American culture from him, and I see that he has certain skills and he makes very interesting films.
With regard to his view on black/African American culture, I appreciate that he introduces views and angles that people do not normally see on TV programs and major motion pictures. IMO, he is not trying to preach us, but he is showing us different views and angles, and I must say that I personally enjoy watching his films.

See, I do think he tends to preach, and I think some of his films suffer for it, but I also think he's talented. IMO, his films are pretty hit and miss for me. When he's good, he's very good. When he misses the mark...

Afraid I haven't seen it. The last Spike Lee film I watched was "Get On The Bus". I rented it last year. I thought it made some great points, but I also thought Lee presented some groups within the Black community in stereotypical terms, and that's where the preachiness came into it for me.

Yes, I've seen it and I have to agree with you; he did make good points, but the way he presented the material was kind of uninteresting. I didn't feel that he presented new or interesting view on the subject.

Definitely TALENTED! But I think he needs to get over himself and make a couple of movies that might appeal to larger audiences. His early films introduced very unique cinemaphotography and the acting is always top notch!
Spike Lee helped boost alot of careers: Rosie Perez, Samuel Jackson, Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Tisha Campbell, and the list goes on.

There is no black actor or actress(who plays a major role) in the movie. Rosario Dawson is in the movie, but she is only a part Puerto Rican, Cuban and African American. That's pretty much only thing you find related to African American in this movie.

25th hour is one of my favorite films. I think Ed Norton is an amazing actor. Spike Lee IMO is pretty hit or miss. When he hits it it's out of the park though.
Bamboozled was insane. It really blew my mind.

Bamboozled was pretty creative. I really enjoyed watching the movie. Kind of hard to say which one I liked better, 25th Hour or Bamboozled. By the way, IMO, 25th Hour portrayed what was happening in post 9/11 era really well. There was no direct reference to 9/11, but the movie captured what was going on in people's mind.

Spike Lee can be a little annoying at times but his talent is undeniable.
I need to catch up with his more recent films though as I haven't seen a Spike Lee movie since Malcolm X.
Any suggstions?

25th Hour is very accessible. What's cool about the movie is that the movie was made during and after 9/11. The movie is about one guy's view on life, but it overlaps with how America truly reacted to 9/11. Very good movie.
Bamboozled is very Spike Lee-ish. One needs to recognize that the movie is a satire. Though it deals a very serious subject, one ought to understand that it is a satire and the movie is made to introduce a certain perspective.
